The new 2025 timetable takes effect

25.11.2024

From 15 December 2024

The new 2025 timetable comes into effect from 15 December. Apart from a few changes, it mainly includes a consolidation of the TILO range of services from 2024. There are temporary timetable changes due to planned construction works on the railways. Passengers are recommended to consult the online timetable before travelling.

Changes to TILO connections

TILO Pigiama

The timetable changes include the introduction of night services on a few days before certain public holidays. The so-called “pyjama connections” operate on the following nights:

  • St. Joseph’s Day: night of 18 to 19 March 2025
  • Labour Day: night of 30 April to 1 May 2025
  • Ascension Day: night of 28 to 29 May 2025
  • Corpus Christi: night of 18 to 19 June 2025
  • National holiday: night of 31 July to 1 August 2025
  • Assumption Day: night of 14 to 15 August 2025

RE80 Locarno‒Lugano‒Chiasso‒Milan

The additional connections introduced in June 2024 are confirmed and are included in the annual timetable. These are: the connection that runs daily from Locarno at 8:22 p.m. and arrives at Milano Centrale at 10:17 p.m., and the RE80 connection, which operates daily from Milano Centrale at 10.43 p.m. and arrives at Locarno at 12.38 a.m.

Balerna station will again be served by evening trains from Locarno at 9:22 p.m., 10:22 p.m. and 11.22 p.m., and by the evening train from Milan at 9.43 p.m.

S50 Biasca–Bellinzona–Lugano–Varese–Malpensa

The extension of the S50 connection from Gallarate is also confirmed and is included in the annual timetable. This is the morning S50 connection from Gallarate at 5.45 a.m., which continues on to Varese, Lugano, Bellinzona and Biasca. This connection departs from Varese at 6:06 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

S10 Biasca–Bellinzona–Lugano–Chiasso–Como

With the new timetable, the S10 connection from Como S. Giovanni at 7.10 a.m. now departs from a different station. From Monday to Friday, the S10 departs from Como Camerlata at 7 a.m. The S10 southbound, arriving at Chiasso at 6.40 a.m., terminates here and does not continue on to Como S. Giovanni. Services operate to and from Como S. Giovanni on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

S30 Cadenazzo–Luino–Gallarate

The connection to Bellinzona from Monday to Friday, departing from Luino at 5.40 a.m., also stops at Magadino-Vira. Therefore, the connection from Bellinzona at 5.53 a.m. no longer stops at Magadino-Vira.

The most important infrastructure construction work in 2025

Construction works: summer timetable
A summer timetable comes into effect from 21 June to 31 August 2025. This means that several larger construction projects can be carried out on the Ticino railway network at the same time. All changes are included in the annual timetable.

The following connections in particular are affected:

  • IC connections to Lugano: no connections for TILO RE80 services
  • RE80 connections: slightly adapted departure times from Lugano and Paradiso

Evening closure for Cadenazzo–Locarno
From 2 February to 11 December, the route between Cadenazzo and Locarno will be closed from Sunday to Thursday from 11.10 p.m. until the end of operations. This affects the S20 and RE80 lines. This is due to work on the dual-track expansion between Contone and Ponte sul Ticino. Rail replacement buses operate. The trains operate normally during the school holidays and the Rabadan carnival in Bellinzona.

Trackworks on S30 line

For services between Ranzo S. Abbondio and Luino on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the connections from Cadenazzo at 10.04 a.m. and from Luino at 11.18 a.m. are cancelled. Rail replacement buses operate.

Given these changes, we recommend that all travellers check their connections on the online timetable by entering a date after 15 December 2024.
